University Overview

The Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore was founded in Milan on December 7, 1921 by Father Agostino Gemelli. The university’s first courses in Philosophy and Social Sciences were held in the historic building located in via S. Agnese. These first courses, like all the courses that have followed, were inspired by Gemelli’s desire to promote cultural growth while fostering human and spiritual development. Since its founding, the university has become a central point of reference for the Milanese intellectual community. In 1968 approximately 30,000 students were registered at the university. This figure helps to illustrate how the Università Cattolica had developed into an important academic community, divided into 8 faculties: Economics, Law, Languages and Literature, Educational Science, Banking, Finance and Insurance Sciences, Political Science and Psychology.
