University Overview
The current Royal Holloway, University of London was formed by the 1985 merger of two University of London schools: Bedford College, founded in 1849, and the original Royal Holloway College, opened in 1886 by Queen Victoria. Each of the original colleges had joined the University of London in 1900. Each of the original school was a college for women until they both started accepting male undergraduates in the 1960s.
The College is well-known for its
art collection, including a collection of Victorian paintings in Founder's Building Picture Gallery and temporary exhibits in the Davison Building.
The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) quality assessment placed Royal Holloway in the top 25 percent of UK universities. Its Drama, Earth Sciences, Psychology, Mathematics and Music departments were each ranked it the top five nationally, while the Media Arts and Modern Languages departments were both in the top ten.
