University Overview

The University of St Andrews is located in the city of St Andrews. Founded in 1411, St Andrews is the oldest university in Scotland. The city of St Andrews is small, with a population of 16,000 and the University has 6,000 faculty and students, which means an average of 1 in 3 of the people you see in shops or on the streets will in some way be connected to the University. Local and University events in the town blend to offer a rich cultural and social life for students and townspeople alike. The antiquity of the city and the university means wonderful old buildings, city walls, shops, and houses of stone, with a street plan with is still medieval. Many students use bicycles as a convenient way of getting around the town but all areas of the university are within easy walking distance of one another.

Location

From a medieval town of fisherman and farmers raised the quiet and beautiful city of St. Andrews, originally known as Kilrymont. St. Andrews is famous for amazing views, the small community feeling, and the medieval structures that still stand today. The most famous of this architecture is the great St. Andrews Cathedral that was constructed in 1160. For centuries this place of worship was the largest building in all of Scotland, and helped establish the city of St. Andrews as the center of religious life for the country. This cathedral still stands today in all of its majestic beauty. Much of the city is protected under conservation laws and areas to keep the historic buildings in place, and to ensure the survival of this city’s heritage. Along with St. Andrews Cathedral, the city also is extremely well versed in golfing, picturesque views, as well as the arts, including music, drama, and crafts.

NOTE: Do not fly to Scotland via Dublin - their immigration policies are different at the Dublin airport, and therefore when you arrive in Scotland, they will tell you that you have to leave the country and come-back in again within the first two weeks.
