The China Studies Institute was founded by American University in Washington DC in 1986 and began operating independently in 2004 out of Pekin University. In this time, the school has grown to a small program of under 100 students to a program of over 200 students annually. The Institute accredits its growth to their strong academic program available in both English and Chinese language immersion, their increased entry standards, the enthusiasm of their faculty, and their 40+ partner universities all over the world.
Students participating in the China Studies Institute can take classes instructed in English in a variety of disciplines: Art History, Business, Chinese Language, History, International Relations, Political Science, and Sociology. CSI also provides Language Immersion tracks, which are structured course-loads focusing on Chinese Language study only. Professors at the China Studies Institute hail from all over the globe, earning their doctorates from institutions such as Cornell University, Yale University, University of Maryland, and Peking University to name a few. Additionally, many of these professors are active professors and even Associate Deans at Peking University. Due to the small class sizes, students are given ample opportunity to interact not only with their peers but the programs prestigious faculty to create a unique educational experience. The China Studies Institute is located in Beijing City, on and around the facilities of Peking University. CSI also provides weekend-trips to places such as the Forbidden City and the Great Wall, as well as provides six Study Trips. These study trips take students to several other Chinese cities and providences . These trips compliment the student's classroom experiences by increasing their language immersion and enriching their education through exploration and experience. All students participating in the China Studies Institute program are housed by the institution. There are off-campus apartments and home-stays available, however these options are usually reserved for students participating in the Language Immersion programs. Otherwise, the majority of students will live in CSI's on-campus dormitories. All dormitories include private bathrooms and are equipped with air-conditioning and internet access, as well as a television and phone. You can learn more about their housing options here
