Information for Families

Helping your student prepare to spend a semester or full academic year abroad can seem overwhelming but can also be a big help to your student. The Global Education Office can offer advice to you as well as to your student to help make your student's study abroad experience as enjoyable (and stress-free) as possible.

 
You are welcome to contact the Global Education Office or Associate Dean for International Education, Dr. Rebeca Moreno, with any questions. We may be limited by privacy choices made by your student, however, so we encourage you to check with your student first. Information on emergency insurance, grade conversions, costs, and countless other details can be found on the students' Canvas course webpage, so we invite you to sit down with your student and review that page before their departure.

We encourage you to read through the Pre-Departure Guide for the current  academic year. This information (and guidebook) will be distributed to participating students prior to departure, however it is very useful for parents/guardians and families who have a loved one studying abroad through WC and the Global Education Office. Safety Abroad

The highest priority at Washington College is the safety and wellbeing of our students. This is especially important for students studying abroad. This page will provide you with additional information on best practices for ensuring your personal safety while abroad, as well as additional safety resources.

Procedures for each study abroad program are different. The information contained in this section is to provide general guidelines regarding the part of the study abroad process known as pre-departure.
